Triggers

A trigger is an external action that affects us. Triggers, as the name suggests, trigger a trauma reaction from us. According to Psychology Today, triggers are any topics that make us feel uncomfortable. The word trigger is often misused in our modern culture and implies that we have no control over it. However, through The Mentally STRONG Method, we know that we can control our response to the situation.

Core Connections

Core connections are our deep beliefs about ourselves that are not positive. Think of this as Core connections are our deep beliefs about ourselves that are not positive. Think of this as our internal voice that tells us we are less than. Examples could be, “I am stupid,” “I am unorganized,” or “I am ugly.” When we are triggered by something, we are having a response to these negative core beliefs, or core connections.

Dr. B explaining Core Connections and Triggers

What are common Core Connections?

Some common Core Connections are:

  • I am stupid
  • I am fat
  • I am ugly
  • I am not worthy
  • I am not good enough

Where do our Core Connections come from?

Core connections are generally negative beliefs that form early on in our lives. This can look very different for everyone, but they can arise from negative self-talk or others’ comments to us. Core connections are negative core beliefs that are held deep within our subconscious minds. Generally, these core connections develop within the first six years of our lives. These core connections are deep parts of ourselves that we remember because our brains are hard-wired to remember things that scare us. However, it is important to question these core connections, as they are beliefs that no longer serve us.

How do we combat our Triggers?

We can combat our triggers by understanding and naming the core connection that is being triggered. For example, if we can understand that we are being triggered based on our core connection of, “I am stupid,” we can check ourselves and correct our negative beliefs. We can correct this by saying, “I am not stupid, I am capable and able to think critically to solve this problem.”

We can start combating our triggers by giving our core connections percentages of how much we believe them to be true. At the beginning of your Mentally STRONG journey, you may believe your core connections to be 70-80% true; however, with work, it is possible to reduce this percentage.
